Due to a training on Thursday morning, and teacher inservice day on Friday, Wednesday August 14 was our last full day of summer vacation - so we made the most of it!
The kids and I slept in and snuggled at home in the morning, then headed out to resume our Herky hunting adventure. First, per Braden's request, we had lunch at McDonald's.
The armed with our map and Herky app, we hit Coralville to cross a bunch of Herkys off our list . . .
We even found a few Herkys "again" . . . meaning that we'd already been to them earlier and taken pictures, but when the kids saw them, they wanted to take a picture again. I couldn't believe how many Herkys we'd been close to and just never found. I guess at first we didn't think we were really going to try and find them ALL so didn't look closely to see which ones were nearby. These next 2 are 2nd time photos.
The kids were REALLY wanting to go to the pool here and I had a hard time getting them to look at the camera!
It was a great time to hunt - many were inside and you have to get to those when the buildings they are in are open to the public, like this guy in the arts center.
So with 10 new Herkys under our belts, we picked up Billy when he got off work at 3:30 and continued our hunt with Daddy along. Armed with the sit n stand stroller, we hit up the downtown area. It was fun because there was a Herky almost every block or so!
What wasn't so much fun was trekking all around (and pushing said stroller) in the heat. I suppose it really wasn't that hot, but because we'd had such a mild summer, upper 80s seemed really toasty!
A nice stranger even took a family photo for us! :)
At this point, we were HOT and hungry, so we hit up our favorite pizza joint to rejuvenate in their a/c. Doesn't Billy look thrilled? He seriously was reallllly humoring me by this time. I wanted to get all the downtown ones done . . . but he wanted to just be d.o.n.e.
. . . so after a pizza pep up and time to regroup and figure out where the Herkys we still needed were/plan a route, we went at it again!
Whew! We think we hit 35 new ones that day! Miss Elise was beat and fell asleep on the way home (it was only about 7:00). We thought she seemed warm while we were hunting, but we were all hot. Billy took her temp that night, and she was running a slight temp. However, we discovered Elise had a rash and a blister on her foot the next day and concluded that she'd come down with hand, foot and mouth disease (cousin Maura had it just before we went to MN together, and apparently Elise got it - thankfully Braden did not). Luckily she had a very mild case, and it all disappeared very quickly and she was fever free by the next day.
Oh yeah - earlier that day we'd stopped at Scratch for some yummy gourmet cupcakes that we had at home for dessert, followed by a little bike riding in the driveway in jammies. :)
PS - for lack of a better place to post this one - on Sunday we stopped for this Herky after church. We intended to do a few more, but we were still pooped from Wednesday!
