hello? spring? are you there?

Can I just say how ready I am to bid farewell to this year's never-ending winter season?  Ugh.  I like pretty, white snow as much as the next guy (gal), but really, this is bordering on ridiculous.  I failed to take a picture (at this point, who really wants more snow pictures??), but yesterday we again got a blanket of snow!  Snow.  On March 18.  :(

To make things worse, I was dreaming of warmer temps and recalling how lovely the weather was last year at this time.  (I remember quite clearly, as I was home with Elise and enjoying the gorgeous days). This picture was taken on year ago (March 17 to be exact) . . . Check out the green grass, blue sky, and SHORTS!

Tomorrow the calendar tells us that spring is here . . . I will believe it when I see/feel it.  It's predicted to be around ZERO with windchill tomorrow.

And while I am being a Debbie Downer, let me just document my day today:

• As I was just about to wake Braden to get him dressed (and then Elise too!) so that we could scoot out the door (actually a bit early!) today, the phone rang.  Yep, 7:15.  It's never a good phone call at 7:15 am. . . Our daycare provider was calling to let me know her child was sick and that she needed to close for the day.  This is totally understandable, but seriously??  I find this out at 7:15.  I have to be in my classroom at 7:45.  Thankfully, my dear mom graciously agreed to fill in (upon receiving my Oh Snap! SOS call) and ran right over.   Thanks, Mom!!!! (yes, this warrants extra exclamation points, Allison)

• Due to our all school spring music concert later this week, our music class times have been altered/rearranged and our classroom schedule is a mess (I think only teachers will get how crazy this can be).  It didn't dawn on me till I got to work that since our music class today was cancelled and switched to tomorrow, that meant we had NO SPECIALS at all today. (Specials = education speak for the extra classes during which kids leave the classroom and teachers have prep time -- like music, PE, art, etc.).  Let me tell you, we teachers LOVE our specials, especially with report cards due on Friday.  So yeah, a day of NO specials is pretty much a day of NO breaks.

• Add on to that, (only teachers will get this one too), today is the cycle day in which I have 2 recess duties.  They cut our morning recess this year, so that means that during my only 2 break times of the day, I had to bundle up in my big ol' coat, scarf, and gloves and head out into the wind to freeze - not once, but twice today.  I am all for recess and fresh air, and I usually don't really mind duty, but on days like this I question the notion that really, truly, why did I work so hard to earn that master's degree to work in a profession where I can be forced to go outside and FREEZE multiple times a day? (If Mother Nature would wake up and realize that it is MARCH 19, this one might not have been so horrid.)

• Finally, here I am at 8:15pm, working in my classroom to complete my report cards.  Well, clearly, I am not actually working on them right this second, but I needed a break (I mean, I didn't get one all day, right?).  Sadly, gone are the days where I can take schoolwork home and expect to accomplish anything.  (As they should), my family demands seeks my attention when I am home, and I do want to give it to them. Work after the kiddos go to bed? Ahh - that typically does not work out fore me. . . once they are in bed, I usually find myself falling asleep almost immediately (just ask Billy), unless I am trying really hard to stay awake to catch up on my new obsession, Downton Abbey.  (I am midway through Season 2, and just can't wait for the weekend to watch more!)

How's that for a hum-dinger of a day?

So - SPRING?  Are you ready to arrive? Because I sure am ready for you!  I am just hoping that by the time our "spring break" (which this year amounts to Friday/Monday off over Easter weekend), it will actually feel like spring.  I kinda feel sorry for all of those teachers and kiddos who are off for spring break this week.  (I said kinda.)
