Guess who started preschool today? (Sorry for the blurry photo . . . the first day back to work after winter break is not a good morning to take extra time on things like picture taking when one is really just trying to make it out the door!)
. . . and this shot cracks me up! It really was hard just to get up this morning! . . . and Braden was not really wanting to pose for me :)
So today B began his formal school career! He's now attending Parkside Preschool in Wellman, which is one of the Mid-Prairie PK programs (the district in which I teach). He just missed the cut off date to attend PK this fall (he turned 4 in October), so he should really start next year. However, we really want to get a jump start working on his social speech communication. After working with a speech path this fall, we decided to go ahead and enter him into PK second semester of this year to give him opportunities to work on his social speech. The Kalona PK sites were all full, so he gets to ride the big yellow bus about 7 miles each day to a Wellman location. The bus picks him up at day care, and then brings him back to my school where he will usually then catch a shuttle back to day care (or sometimes will just come home with me).
I was feeling bad about not being able to take Braden to his first day of school (since I of course had to be teaching my own class). . . So I sent my camera with my good friend who is the PK bus "chaperone" (they wisely have another adult on the bus in addition to the driver to keep close track of who gets on/off when and where), and she snapped a few pictures for me:

I think he had a good day . . . of course he doesn't say much (that's why we have him there), but he did tell me that he liked it and wanted to go back tomorrow. He said he played with blocks and toys. I asked him if he had any new friends, and he told me that Miss Paula is his new friend. :) She also sent an e-mail reporting that while he was rather shy, he did participate in all of the activities and seemed to have a good time. We're so glad that his first day went well, and look forward to finding what the rest of the year will hold.
It was kind of funny for me (as a teacher) to now be on the "parent" end of things . . . I went through his back pack and found several things from his teacher: The January calendar with each week's learning focus (this week is letter "i") and the star of the week (B gets to be the star later this month!), a request for snacks, and some songs/poems to work on at home. Let the fun begin!
