End of May {Bowling, PreK Program/Potluck and Parkview flooding}

Clearly I am quite behind on the ol' blog.  The end of May is always such a blur as the school year wraps up - hopefully I can get caught up now that SUMMER is here! (Although this week it doesn't feel much like it as I am taking a class alllllll week - but we have managed to take our first trips to the pool - pics to come!)

Bowling
Memorial Day weekend was a rainy one this year . . . and didn't feel very celebratory because we weren't able to do traditional Memorial Day weekend activities like go on a picnic or the first trip to the pool of the season.  To beat "cabin fever" from being inside all weekend due to the rain, we went bowling on Monday.  Grandpa and Grandma Miller joined in the fun.

Grandpa got "Elise duty" . . . since it was her naptime she was (generally) pretty content to hang out on Grandpa's lap while the rest of us bowled

Braden had a lot of fun . . . but sometimes we wondered if his ball would EVER make it down the lane! (Note that he is wearing a tank top over his long sleeved shirt . . . it was cold that weekend, but for some reason B is obsessed with wearing tank tops this summer.  He reallllly wanted to wear his new Spiderman tank top, so we compromised and he wore it over another shirt.)

 We let Braden play as 2 people - on the roster we had me, Bill, Braden, Grandma Jane, and Spiderman. This allowed Braden more action and he didn't have to wait so long for his turn to roll around.   Probably not surprisingly, Spiderman (Braden's alias for his second turn) won!  (Though in defense of the rest of us, he also used the bumpers).

PreK Potluck/Program
Braden's preschool had an end of the year potluck and a little "program" where the kids sang a few songs.  I was able to sneak away from school over lunch and Mom and I got to attend. It was fun to see the kids B went to school with (although both the AM and PM classes were there, so it was a little overwhelming for him to see so many extra people).  As I expected, Braden wasn't big on singing the songs, but at least he did (reluctantly) get up front to participate with the other kiddos.

I took a little video of the kiddos singing . . . like I said, B wasn't a big singer, but it's still pretty cute :)

Parkview Flooding
This year the end of May also brought (more) flooding to Iowa. The year B was born ('08) our church, Parkview (located right beside the Iowa River), was flooded with several feet of water and we had to leave the building for several months and renovate.  So a couple of weeks ago when the river was on the rise, we stopped by the church one night when we were in IC to see how high the water was getting at church and were surprised to see that the water was already covering half the parking lot AND that they were building a berm of dirt around the building.   (My camera battery was dying, so I struggled to get a few shots.)

We found out later that they worked all through the night constructing the berm, and that it will become a permanent part of the landscaping.  Luckily, the water did not get as high as it did in '08, and the church remained dry this year.
